Exarchia

Exarchia is a bohemian district in central Athens, a haunt of artists and left-wing intellectuals.  It sits between the University of Athens and the Politechnion and is home to students, immigrants, Greek families of different economic strata, cafes, computer shops, used vinyl and CD shops, bookshops, clubs, bars, anarchists, drug addicts and anyone who likes to challenge authority. It is also a neighbourhood most recently known for the death of a 15- year old boy Alexander Grigoropoulou, who was shot by a police officer, which set off the riots in December 2008. These images were taken in Summer 2010, a much quieter and more peaceful time for the locals, who are seen spending time talking and relaxing in their neighbourhood.
