To the Sri Lankan people, cricket is an obsession that they live and breathe on a daily basis. Perhaps not surprisingly, the country boasts some of the best cricket players in the world. Despite the dire lack of facilities, the enthusiasm of thousands of young cricketing hopefuls is as infectious as ever and constant hard work means that there is an ongoing supply of talented young men ready to take their places on the cricketing fields of the world. Trinity College in Kandy has played a significant role in this regard. The institution was founded in 1872 by Anglican missionaries. It is an independent elite private boys’ school which provides primary and secondary education. It is widely considered to be the premier private boys’ school in the country and also holds the distinction of being the only school in the world to own an international cricket stadium (Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy). Trinity College has become somewhat of an academy, providing cricket training programs to enable young men to refine their skills, offering them a launching pad to bigger and better things. Although the facilities are basic, the college has produced some of cricket’s greats, such as former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara. International coaches also make an appearance throughout the year.
